Holysnails Shark Sauce is a cult product that I discovered accidentally when I was browsing the Asian Beauty reddit threads. It is a hydrating serum that contains  5% Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and 3% N-Acetyl Glucosamine, which work together synergistically to fight hyper-pigmentation.  They, along with Panthenol (Vitamin B5), also work to help improve your skin barrier.

Shark Sauce™ does not contain sharks, shark extract, shark wings, or any other shark derivatives. Its name comes from a nickname of one of their muses, Fifty Shades of Snail, (an Asian Beauty blogger) for whom it was originally created.

Holysnails Sauce du Mois contain all of the regular ingredients that the Original Shark Sauce has. The difference is that they had reduced some of the Distilled Water and added in other ingredients, such as Lemon Peel Bioferment in their Lemon Shark, or Herbal Extracts in their Hanbang Shark. Usually there would be different “flavours” each month for the customers to try.

In July 2017, Holysnails shop brought back all of the previous months’ Sauce du Mois in a bid for the customers to pick out one Sauce du Mois to be added to their regular lineup! The Sauce du Mois that wins will be available for the next six months. I picked up the March 2017 Hanbang Shark as well as Dec 2016 Lemon Shark to try.

Hanbang Shark features an amazing cocktail of ingredients such as Ceramides, Ginseng, Horse Chestnut, Chamomile, Ginger Root, Goji Berry, Centella Asiatica, and Calendula Extracts to provide your face with a powerhouse combination of skin-saving antioxidants.

Below are its ingredients for your information.

Distilled Water, Sea Kelp Bioferment, Licorice Root Extract, Niacinamide, Ceramides, Ginseng Extract, Horse Chestnut Extract, Chamomile Extract, Ginger Root Extract, Goji Berry Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Calendula Extract, N-Acetylglucosamine, Sodium Lactate, Panthenol, Glycerin, Green Tea Extract, Hyaluronic Acid, Propylene Glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Disodium EDTA

How does the Holysnails Hanbang Shark Sauce fare?

In a nutshell, I love this serum! It’s everything that I expected this product to be and more. Firstly, I find that this product is hydrating enough that I do not need to use a separate hydrating serum and that has never happened before. As I’m usually in an air-conditioned office for most of my working hours, my skin gets dehydrated pretty easily. So I would always use a separate hydrating serum no matter what other serums I layer over. I tried, with trepidation, to use it on its own without that extra layer one day and it performed splendidly. Additionally, due to the inclusion of ceramides as well as anti-inflammatory herbal extracts in its formula, it is incredibly soothing and helps to combat residual redness in my skin resulting from the use of my strong actives. I feel that using this particular version of Shark Sauce (Hanbang Shark) is akin to feeding my skin with nourishing herbal soup (请皮肤吃补汤) and it simply looks, feels and behave healthier. As for my PIH, I think it has helped slightly to make it lighter but I think that my usage of Vitamin C serums and my acid peels contributed the most to that lightening. If you are looking for a soothing hydrating serum that would help to repair your moisture barrier without feeling heavy on your skin, I highly recommend that you get this product.

Side Note: I’m using a dedicated Vitamin C serum in my morning skincare routine and although there were some articles stating that you can’t use products containing niacinamide together with Vitamin C, personally I’ve had no problems with it. Also, read kindofstephen’s take on this topic here. He’s a cosmetic scientist FYI. Just take note if you are especially susceptible to redness or flushing.

Where can you find it?

I bought it from the Holysnails Online Shop. They do ship worldwide. It retails at US$34 (30ml sized).
